Topic "Pilot Knoll / Elm Fork Trails" a message from Leslie

Just rode this trail again yesterday, and it's still in great shape, with only a little mud. The big drilling rig is gone from the Bishop Lane area, so we only had to deal with the 2499 construction. The tunnel is still closed to riders, but it appeared the drainage was being worked on.
We had unexpected company at the Old Alton Trailhead: a different construction crew was working on Copper Canyon Rd. towards Old Alton and the bridge, and needed to pull some big equipment into our lot. They waited patiently while we finished tacking up so we could get on the trail before they did so, but our horses' eyes were as big as saucers as they approached!

A few of us stayed at the Grasslands Bed & Barn beginning Fri, Nov 20, for 3 or 4 days, and rode parts of the Red, White, Yellow, and Blue trails. Even though Friday started out with rain, we ended up with good weather and some great rides. The fall colors were still lovely, especially contrasted with the green grass and evergreens. The ponds were full and there was water standing in some of the creekbeds. We didn't see any hunters, but we had bells on the horses and bright colors on us just in case!

Lisa Broughton led this ride on a beautiful November day. Six of us began at Lantana Lodge and rode north and back for about an hour and a half, then had a scrumptious lunch at the Bronze Buffalo Grill. Three of us continued our ride after lunch, riding almost to the Isle du Bois campground and back. The trails were in very good shape, and even though a short stretch of the loop at the far north end was under water, the rest of the ride was mostly mud-free! Don't miss this ride next time!

Al & I rode this trail in both directions from Old Alton Trailhead last week, and there were only a few places still muddy from all the rain. I wouldn't recommend crossing the creek on the north side (aka "Alibird Crossing", after Alice Morgan & Bird Gierhart) -- the water is flowing and very high, and you can't see the submerged cement bags, so it could be dangerous. On the south side, we rode until we saw the huge gas drill near Bishop Lane, turning around as much because of the construction noise as the mud on the lower trail. That was still almost a 2-hour ride, so with another good weather week, it should be great riding! Leslie Olsson

As of Saturday, 10/17/09, trails were good and getting better after all the rain earlier in the month. The far northern part of the Blue trail was pretty sloppy, so everyone doing the Ride for Strides was rerouted to the Yellow, which was fine -- a few mud puddles, but definitely rideable.
